Tiny linux

Zonbu is planning to role out a tiny, fanless computer, Linux-based, that will have a starting price of $99, but at this promotional price you will also pay $12.95/month. The $12.95 per month are for a 25GB of data storage on the Zonbu servers, to give you the ability to use this tiny device anywhere you want. But if you need more data storage, Zonbu can give you up to 100GB of storage on their secure servers, at a bigger price of course. The device comes with a default 4GB of flash memory and it will automatically backup a copy of your data on the Zonbu servers.

The device is based on Gentoo Linux and it’s powered by the very popular KDE desktop environment. Among the numerous Open Source applications, you will find software such as the popular Mozilla Firefox web browser, OpenOffice.org Suite, MPlayer video player, GnuCash software that covers basic accounting needs for individuals and families, F-Spot personal photo management, an iTunes-like music player called Amarok, Skype VoIP software and a lot of other KDE-based applications.

From the photos, we can notice that the tiny device has 5 USB ports on the back and one in front, keyboard and mouse PS/2 connectors, ethernet jack, VGA out, wireless antenna jack and a CF card reader. Unfortunately, the device doesn’t come with a keyboard or mouse, so you’ll have to buy them, if you don’t have a spare. Also, it is obvious that you will need a broadband Internet connection.

If you don’t want to pay the $12.95 per month, the device will cost you $250.
